Shea Humbrey

Shea Humbrey is a Visiting Assistant Professor at the School of Art, Texas Tech University. His practice intertwines painting, sculpture, and installation to explore environmental issues, cosmic structures, and interdisciplinary art-science dialogues.

Humbrey’s recent projects focus on environmental art, exemplified by habitat restoration initiatives like landscape paintings that evolve into native bird habitats. His Cosmosis sculptures and Energy Maps use unconventional materials (feathers, cosmic dust diagrams) to question cosmic order and energy dynamics. The SEEK biennial—a solo project featuring 100 fictional artists—garnered international attention via a New York Times Sunday Magazine profile and TED Talk.

His When Eyes Are Closed series metaphorically interprets dark matter through light-reactive paintings, while Ash Works interrogates spirituality via charred religious texts. Residencies at institutions like Djerassi and Ucross underscore his collaborative approach. Notable exhibitions include Hallwalls and Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery in New York City.
