About
Shaun Frape is a Professor of Inorganic Geochemistry at the University of Waterloo's Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, specializing in groundwater flow systems, contaminant transport, and isotope hydrogeochemistry. With over 30 years of international research experience in Finland, Canada, Greenland, Australia, South America, and India, his work spans deep crystalline rock hydrogeology, groundwater-surface water interactions, and sustainable water resource management.
- PhD, Queen's University (1979)
- MSc, Queen's University (1974)
- BSc (Hons), Queen's University (1972)
Research Focus:
• Deep groundwater systems in crystalline and sedimentary rocks
• Contaminant migration between groundwater and surface waters
• Regional groundwater quantity/quality assessment
• Climate change impacts on water resources
• Radioactive waste disposal safety studies
Selected Research Trends:
Recent publications emphasize contaminant transport modeling using isotopic tracers, with applications to DNAPL source characterization, arsenic-safe aquifer identification, and urban groundwater pollution mitigation.
Scientific Recognition:
- O.E. Meinzer Prize in Hydrogeology (2007)
- Double Fellow of International Association of Geochemistry (2011) and Geological Society of America (2006)
- UW Outstanding Performance Award (2015)
Leadership Roles:
• Undergraduate Officer, Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences
• Long-term journal editorial roles (Applied Geochemistry, Groundwater, Geology)
• Peer review leadership in nuclear waste storage programs (Finland, Canada)
