Dr. Sharon D. Morrison is a Professor in the Department of Public Health Education at the University of North Carolina Greensboro (UNCG), and a Research Fellow with UNCG’s Center for New North Carolinians. Her work focuses on global health, immigrant/refugee health, cultural adaptation, and community-based participatory research. She collaborates with diverse communities such as Montagnard refugees, African immigrants, and Latinx groups to address health disparities and social integration challenges. Dr. Morrison has conducted research in multiple countries including Malaysia, Rwanda, and Thailand, studying refugee survival strategies and health systems.
Education: She holds a Ph.D. in Health and Human Performance (University of Florida), an MSPH in Parasitology (UNC Chapel Hill), and additional certifications in Latin American Studies and Biology. Her academic career emphasizes bridging academic research with community needs, particularly in marginalized populations.
Research Interests: Her current projects include examining refugee communities’ responses to the pandemic, assessing aging Montagnard refugees’ health needs, and studying teaching dynamics in multicultural academic settings. She employs ethnographic and participatory methods to ensure culturally responsive care strategies.
Professional Engagements: As a board member of the Association for Refugee Service Professionals (ARSP), she advocates for displaced individuals’ rights. Her work often involves training community health workers and developing inclusive educational curricula.
