Florida International UniversityAbout
Dr. Sharan Ramaswamy is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Florida International University (FIU), with a tenure since 2009. He holds a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Iowa (2003) and has conducted post-doctoral work at NIH and the University of Pittsburgh. His research focuses on cardiovascular mechanobiology, regenerative medicine, and engineered tissue models for therapeutic applications.
Dr. Ramaswamy directs the Cardiovascular Therapeutics Laboratory (CV-PEUTICS), investigating biomechanically-driven diagnostics and therapies for cardiovascular diseases. Key projects include developing regenerative heart valves using porcine small intestinal submucosa (SIS) substrates and mechanically regulated stem cells, as well as elucidating mechanobiological mechanisms in aortic valve calcification. His work is supported by grants from the AHA, NSF, and industry partners.
Notable achievements include patents on bioreactor systems for valve regeneration, stem cell-derived exosome production, and materials for cardiovascular repair. He is an AHA and ASME Fellow, and his research has resulted in over 100 peer-reviewed publications and patents.
Dr. Ramaswamy advises graduate and undergraduate students in BME at FIU, emphasizing translational research and interdisciplinary collaboration. His lab’s innovations aim to bridge gaps between mechanobiological insights and clinical applications in cardiovascular therapy.
