Shaobo Cui is a fourth-year PhD student and Doctoral Assistant at the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (LIA), École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). His research focuses on Human-Aligned Causal Intelligence, Generative AI, and Human-Computer Interaction. Supervised by Prof. Boi Faltings, his work has been recognized with awards including the Alibaba Rising Star Award (2020) and DAAD AInet Fellowship (2024). Prior to his PhD, he was a Senior Research Engineer at Alibaba Group’s DAMO Academy, leading projects on recommendation algorithms for virtual influencers. His publications span ACL, AAAI, EMNLP, and KDD, addressing causal reasoning, dialogue systems, and generative AI. He has contributed to 9 patented technologies in HCI and NLP systems.
Education: PhD in Computer Science at EPFL (2021–present); Prior roles include Senior Research Engineer at DAMO Academy (2018–2021).
Research highlights: Developed benchmarks for commonsense causality (δ-CAUSAL), causal strength metrics (CESAR), and heading generation (LOgogram). Active in open-source contributions (e.g., causal-strength Python package).
