About
Dr. Shang Liu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Northeastern University, part of the College of Engineering. He joined Northeastern in January 2024 after roles at the California Air Resources Board, NOAA, and the University of Science and Technology of China. His research focuses on air pollutant origins, aerosol chemistry, and indoor air quality, combining field observations, lab measurements, and modeling.
Education: Ph.D., Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego. Postdoctoral work at Los Alamos National Laboratory and University of Colorado Boulder.
- Research Interests: Aerosol physics/optics, air pollution-climate linkages, advanced analytical techniques (mass spectrometry, spectroscopy).
- Labs/Teams: Leads the Air Resources Research Group, advancing environmental resilience through emissions tracking and policy-relevant science.
Publications: Over 20 peer-reviewed articles, including studies on stratospheric wildfire smoke, sea spray aerosols, and urban ozone dynamics. Recent work emphasizes aerosol-climate interactions and VOC emission impacts.
- Awards: 2025 Faculty Research Team Award for contributions to environmental science.
- Professional Affiliations: American Association for Aerosol Research, AGU, ACS.
Current initiatives include Ph.D. openings in atmospheric chemistry and lab studies on aerosol optical properties.
