Professor Shane Murray is the Dean of Monash University's Faculty of Art Design & Architecture (2007–2023) and a Professor in the Department of Architecture. With a background in architectural design and urban research, he has led initiatives in sustainable housing, urban intensification, and adaptive living spaces. He holds a BArch, MArch, and PhD, with professional recognitions including the Australian Institute of Architects' Neville Quarry Medal (2012) and Life Fellowship (2019).
His research focuses on contemporary housing challenges, urban design innovation, and sustainable development. Notable projects include the St Albans Housing initiative (awarded multiple architecture prizes) and collaborations with the Monash Urban Lab on projects like iHUB, Designing Affordable Sustainable Housing (DASH), and Urban Intensification & Green Infrastructure. He has led major research programs funded by government and industry, including the A$4 million NSW Home NSW project and the Building 4.0 CRC partnership.
Professor Murray has held leadership roles at RMIT University and co-directed the 2006 Venice Architecture Biennale's Australian Pavilion. His work bridges academic research, architectural practice, and policy advocacy, emphasizing equitable urban solutions and adaptive design for changing societal needs.
