About
Shane Browne is Lecturer in Anatomy and Regenerative Medicine at RCSI, with additional appointment as Visiting Scholar at UC Berkeley. He holds a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from NUI Galway (2015) and BEng from same institution (2009). Awarded the Julia Polak European Doctoral Award (2015) and prestigious fellowships from Irish Research Council and American Heart Association during postdoctoral training at UC Berkeley.
His research focuses on biomaterial strategies for wound healing and tissue regeneration. Current projects include a €300K HRB grant (2025-2029) on antimicrobial hydrogels for chronic wounds and a €300K SFI project (2024-2027) on diabetic wound treatments. Additional funding includes $3M DOE collaboration (2024-2027) and European Foundation for Diabetes support (2023-2024).
Browne develops hyaluronic acid-based hydrogels functionalized with growth factors and antimicrobial peptides to enhance vascularization in chronic wounds. His work spans cardiovascular repair, diabetes complications, and advanced in vitro models including stem cell-based microphysiological systems. Articles appear in Biomaterials Science, Tissue Engineering, and Advanced Drug Delivery Reviews.
