About
Dr. Shanbin Shi is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Nuclear Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) since 2018. He directs the RPI Thermal Hydraulics Laboratory and the NuScale E2 Center at RPI. His research focuses on thermal hydraulics, two-phase flow dynamics, and nuclear reactor safety engineering.
Education: B.S. and M.S. in Thermal Engineering from Southeast University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, respectively, and a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering from Purdue University.
Research Interests: Thermal management systems for nuclear reactors, cryogenic propellant tank behavior modeling, heat pipe design for microreactors, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and safety analysis of loss-of-coolant accidents (LOCA). His work integrates experimental validation with advanced modeling techniques to address challenges in next-generation nuclear energy systems and space propulsion.
Labs/Teams: Director of RPI Thermal Hydraulics Laboratory and NuScale E2 Center, leading projects on thermal-hydraulic phenomena, advanced reactor thermal design, and cryogenic fluid dynamics.
