Shamir Mehta

Dr. Shamir Mehta is a Professor of Medicine at McMaster University, holder of the Douglas A. Holder/PHRI Endowed Chair in Interventional Cardiology, and an interventional cardiologist at Hamilton Health Sciences. He serves as Senior Scientist at the Population Health Research Institute and Program Director of the Royal College-certified Interventional Cardiology Training Program at McMaster University and Hamilton Health Sciences, one of Canada’s largest programs in this field.

• Education: MD from University of Toronto’s Faculty of Medicine, internal medicine/cardiology training at University of Toronto, interventional cardiology fellowship at University Health Network, and Master’s in Health Research Methodology at McMaster University

His research focuses on optimizing antiplatelet and antithrombotic therapies, vascular access techniques, and complete revascularization strategies in patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS). He has led landmark trials like TIMACS, RIVAL, and the COMPLETE trial, the latter recognized by the New England Journal of Medicine as one of its Most Notable Articles of 2019.

Current projects include the COMPLETE-2 trial, evaluating physiology-guided versus angiography-guided isPCI strategies and optical coherence tomography imaging for predicting cardiovascular events in ACS patients with multivessel disease. He also maintains an active clinical practice in interventional and structural cardiology, leading percutaneous mitral and tricuspid valve programs at HHS.
