About
Shahid Hussain is an Associate Professor of Biomedical Robotics, AI and Robotics at the University of Canberra. His work focuses on assistive and rehabilitation robotics, compliant actuation, robot mechanism design, nonlinear dynamics, and biomechanical modeling. He holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Auckland (2013) and previously worked as a lecturer at the University of Wollongong.
Research Interests:
- Rehabilitation robotics (ankle, wrist, upper limb, gait rehabilitation)
- Compliant actuation systems and intrinsically compliant robots
- Robot mechanism optimization and parallel mechanisms
- Human-robot interaction and neuromechanical control
- MEMS and viscoelastic microbeam dynamics
- Engineering education innovations using AI and 3D printing
Recent work highlights the integration of AI techniques (deep learning, reinforcement learning) into robotic systems for personalized rehabilitation solutions. He leads projects like the 'Novel Robot for Ankle Neurorehabilitation' (2025-2026) and has published over 80 papers in top journals. Currently accepting PhD students in rehabilitation robotics.
Professional Activities:
- Editorial board member for IEEE Transactions on Human-Machine Systems and IEEE Transactions on Neural Systems
- Organized International Conferences on AI/Robotics (2025) and Sustainable Computing (2024)
