Setsuko Matsuzawa is a Professor of Sociology and Anthropology and East Asian Studies at the College of Wooster. She holds a Ph.D. from UC San Diego, an L.L.M. from Georgetown Law, and degrees from Sophia University and Duke. Her research examines social movements, environmental sociology, and transnational advocacy in East Asia, with emphasis on China, Japan, and Myanmar.
Awarded a Freeman Fellowship, Fulbright Scholarship, and MOFA Taiwan Fellowship, her publications analyze state-movement alliances, energy democracy, and anti-racist activism. Courses include Environmental Sociology, Globalization in China, and Social Movements. She directs projects on land grabbing, women's rights, and post-disaster energy reform.
Her work has appeared in Sociological Inquiry, Mobilization, and Routledge handbooks, highlighting mediation strategies in environmental conflicts and transnational NGO advocacy.
