Seth Cluett serves as Lecturer in the Discipline of Music at Columbia University's Faculty of Arts and Sciences, where he directs the Computer Music Center and co-directs the Sound Art MFA Program. He holds affiliate faculty positions with the Visual Arts Program, Data Science Institute, and Center for Comparative Media, while also maintaining affiliations with the Data, Media, and Society Center and Sense, Collect, and Move Data Center. Additionally, Cluett has been Artist-in-Residence at Nokia Bell Labs since 2017.
His research investigates sensory computation, sound in extended reality, human-machine communication, and the media history of loudspeakers, with artistic practice centered on ecological collapse and resilience through natural materials. Cluett's work bridges technological innovation with environmental themes, exploring human perception through computational sound systems and physical manifestations of ecological processes.
Cluett has secured grants from Meet the Composer, NYSCA, and New Music USA to support his creative research. His work has been presented internationally at The Whitney Museum, MoMA/PS1, CONTEXT Art Miami, GRM, and STEIM, with commissions from TAK Ensemble, Hong Kong Sinfonietta, and International Contemporary Ensemble.
As Director of the Computer Music Center—one of America's oldest electronic music facilities—Cluett oversees cutting-edge research in computer music and sound art. His Nokia Bell Labs residency facilitates cross-disciplinary collaboration between artistic practice and telecommunications research, driving innovation in sensory technologies and data-driven artistic expression.
