Sergiu Groppa

Sergiu Groppa will join Saarland University as a full Professor of Neurology, bringing expertise in translational and clinical-experimental neuroscience. Previously, he served as Acting Senior Physician and Professor for Neurology with a focus on movement disorders at the University Medical Center of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. His work emphasizes neuroimaging, neurostimulation therapies (particularly deep brain stimulation for Parkinson’s disease, tremors, and dystonias), and improving patient-centered care through telemedicine and interprofessional networks.

His research spans neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s and multiple sclerosis, with collaborations across the U.S., U.K., and France. At Saarland University, he will expand acute neurological care, develop specialized treatment programs for epilepsy and neuroimmunological disorders, and foster interdisciplinary collaboration between clinical and theoretical institutes.
