About
Dr. Sebo Withoff is an Associate Professor at the University of Groningen, affiliated with the Faculty of Medical Sciences and the Department of Genetics. He is a core member of the Groningen Institute for Gastro Intestinal Genetics and Immunology (3GI). His primary research focuses on understanding how genetic backgrounds and non-coding RNAs contribute to complex immune-mediated diseases such as Celiac disease, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, and Multiple Sclerosis. Withoff is a pioneer in developing organ-on-chip platforms using patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) to model intestinal and liver tissues, advancing personalized medicine and pharmacogenetics.
He has received notable awards including the 2024 Stimuleringsprijs from the Dutch Coeliac Association and the 2005 Fellowship of the Catherina Research Foundation. His work integrates cutting-edge technologies like CRISPR/Cas9, single-cell RNA sequencing, and organoid models. He has supervised 9 PhD students and contributed to over 80 peer-reviewed publications.
His research also explores organ-on-chip applications for disease modeling, with recent breakthroughs in microfluidic systems mimicking human intestinal and liver functions. Withoff collaborates internationally and actively participates in initiatives like the European Space Agency and the NWO Gravitation Program.
