Ludwig Maximilian University of MunichAbout
Professor Sebastian Theurich serves as Associate Professor for Cancer- and Immunometabolism at the Department of Medicine III, LMU University Hospital in Munich, Germany. He also holds positions as Attending Physician, Head of the Multiple Myeloma Program, and Head of the Interdisciplinary Oncologic Outpatient Unit at Campus Innenstadt. Since 2019, he has led the Cancer- and Immunometabolism Research Group at the Gene Center LMU, bridging laboratory research with clinical oncology practice.
Dr. Theurich completed his medical education at the Universities of Lübeck, Berlin, and Umea (Sweden) from 1997 to 2004, including a clinical fellowship at Columbia University. He earned his MD with distinction from the Max-Delbrück-Center for Molecular Medicine and Charité, Humboldt-University Berlin in 2006, completed board certification in Internal Medicine, Hematology, and Oncology in 2012, and received his habilitation from the University of Cologne in 2015 under Professor Michael Hallek's mentorship.
His research focuses on how metabolic processes influence immune responses in cancer, particularly examining how body composition, adipose tissue distribution, and nutritional status impact cancer progression and treatment responses. His laboratory has made significant contributions to understanding the connections between obesity, insulin resistance, and cancer development through studies on natural killer cells and immunometabolic host factors. Dr. Theurich's work demonstrates how visceral fat distribution affects cytokine release syndrome severity after CAR-T therapy and how metabolic parameters influence responses to immune checkpoint inhibitors.
His publication record reveals a strong focus on translating basic immunometabolism findings into clinical applications, with recent articles examining CAR T-cell therapy optimization, bispecific antibodies for multiple myeloma, and the impact of steroid hormones on anti-tumor immunity. His research spans from molecular mechanisms of T-cell exhaustion to large-scale clinical studies evaluating real-world treatment outcomes.
Dr. Theurich has received recognition including the Basic Science Research Award from the Glaxo-Smith-Kline Foundation (2018) and is a Researcher of the German Cancer Consortium (DKTK) since 2019. He serves on the editorial board of "Immunometabolism" and has contributed to clinical guidelines for therapies including mogamulizumab. His work on nutrition care in cancer and implementation of exercise therapy demonstrates his commitment to comprehensive patient-centered oncology care.
As a clinician-scientist, Dr. Theurich actively supervises research projects and collaborates with numerous institutions across Germany and internationally. His laboratory investigates novel approaches to enhance cancer immunotherapy through metabolic pathway modulation, with potential applications for personalizing cancer treatment based on patients' metabolic and immunological profiles.
