Sebastian Schmidt is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at Johns Hopkins University, affiliated with the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences. He holds a PhD from the University of Chicago. His research focuses on the historical and sociological foundations of security strategies, international order, American global influence, monetary relations, and sovereignty. He has published in top journals such as American Political Science Review and International Organization, and authored the book Armed Guests: Territorial Sovereignty and Foreign Military Basing (Oxford University Press, 2020).
His current work explores pragmatist theoretical perspectives in international politics, emphasizing monetary relations and postwar U.S. security practices. Key themes include the interplay between sovereignty norms and foreign military presence, the persistence of gold in monetary systems, and hierarchical dynamics in international relations.
