Professor Dr. Sebastian Günther is the Chair of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of Göttingen. He previously held tenured positions at the University of Toronto (Associate Professor of Arabic Language and Literature, promoted 2003) and Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg.
He has held visiting professorships and research fellowships at institutions such as Al-Azhar University (Cairo), the American University of Beirut, and New York University Abu Dhabi. Currently, he serves as Germany’s National Representative in the Union Européenne des Arabisants et Islamisants and is a Member of the Initiative Group for the World Forum Human Education in the Third Millennium.
Research Interests: His work focuses on:
- Intellectual and cultural history of Islam
- Islamic ethics and education systems
- History of Arabic-Islamic sciences
- Quranic studies and exegesis
- Arabic literature across periods
- Interfaith dialogue within Abrahamitic traditions
Scientific Honors:
- Elected International Honorary Member, American Academy of Arts and Sciences (April 2025)
He co-edits Brill’s Islamic History and Civilization series and serves on editorial boards of multiple academic journals. His career spans extensive cross-cultural collaborations and leadership in international Islamic studies associations.
