Sean Roberts is a Teaching Associate Professor in Art History at the University of Tennessee. He previously served as Associate Professor and Director of the Art History Program at Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar. From 2017 to 2019, he was President of the Italian Art Society. His research focuses on Europe-Islamic cultural interactions, map histories, and printmaking's role in art and technology.
Roberts holds a Ph.D. in History of Art from the University of Michigan. His publications include Printing a Mediterranean World (2013), co-edited volumes such as The Seas and the Mobility of Islamic Art (2021), and an upcoming biography of Gerardus Mercator with Reaktion Books (2027).
He has contributed to journals like Renaissance Studies and Material Culture Review, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to art history. His work bridges Renaissance geography, early modern visual cultures, and environmental studies in Islamic art.
Roberts is affiliated with the smART Lab and has held leadership roles in academic organizations. His current projects explore the intersection of ecology and cultural production in Islamic contexts.
