Sean P. Cunningham

Sean P. Cunningham is Professor of History and Associate Dean for Administrative Affairs in the College of Arts & Sciences at Texas Tech University, where he has served since 2007 and chaired the Department of History from 2014 to 2023. His administrative leadership extends to the Strategic Enrollment Management Council, Strategic Planning Committee, University Athletics Council, and Texas Tech University Press Editorial Board.

His educational background includes a Ph.D. from the University of Florida, complemented by a B.A. in Public Relations (1999), M.A. in History, and M.Ed. in Higher Education—all earned at Texas Tech University.

Cunningham specializes in modern American political culture with rigorous focus on twentieth-century U.S. history, particularly Texas and Sunbelt politics. His research dismantles simplistic narratives about Texas conservatism by revealing the region's complex political evolution, including the popularity of New Deal policies and the contested rise of modern conservatism. This work demonstrates how geographic specificity intersects with national political transformations.

His major scholarly contributions include three acclaimed books analyzing Texas political history across different eras, reflecting deep archival research and interdisciplinary methodological approaches.
