About
Dr. Sean Nair serves as Reader in Cellular Microbiology within the Microbial Diseases department at University College London's Eastman Dental Institute. Holding a PhD from Cardiff University, he was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 1999 and subsequently to Reader, currently leading the Microbial Diseases division. His research spans two primary domains: bacterial interactions with host cells in disease contexts (particularly microbiome roles in cancer and superbug infections), and development of novel antimicrobial strategies against AMR pathogens.
Research interests focus on:
- Mechanisms of bacterial virulence in chronic infections
- Microbiome contributions to oncogenesis
- Novel therapeutic platforms including bacteriophage therapy, CRISPR-based antimicrobials, and light-activated agents
- Identification of bacterial gene targets for next-generation antibiotics
Nair actively supervises research degrees and contributes to academic service through grant assessment, external examining, and industry collaboration. His teaching portfolio includes leadership of three modules across MSc Infection and Immunity and BSc Applied Medical Sciences programs, specifically Laboratory Introduction to Basic Bacteriology (INIM0016), Research Methods From Bench to Bedside (MEDC0017), and Advanced Medical Bacteriology (MEDC0108).
