About
Sean M. Couch is an Associate Professor at Michigan State University (MSU), holding dual affiliations in the Department of Computational Mathematics, Science and Engineering and the Department of Physics & Astronomy. He is also a Senior Investigator at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Astrophysics-Center for the Evolution of the Elements (JINA-CEE) and affiliated with the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) and the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB). His research focuses on computational astrophysics, particularly core-collapse supernovae, neutrino transport, and the equation of state of dense matter. He earned his Ph.D. in Astrophysics from The University of Texas at Austin (2010) and held prestigious postdoctoral positions, including a Hubble Fellowship at the University of Chicago (2011–2014) and a Senior Postdoctoral Scholar at Caltech’s TAPIR Institute.
Dr. Couch’s work includes groundbreaking contributions to understanding supernova explosion mechanisms and gravitational wave signatures. His research team secured a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) INCITE grant (2015–2017) for high-performance computing resources. He was also awarded the DOE Early Career Research Program grant in 2016. His expertise spans multidimensional simulations, nuclear astrophysics, and exascale computing. Key projects include developing the Flash-X simulation framework and advancing neutrino transport algorithms for core-collapse scenarios.
His scientific achievements are highlighted by over 70 peer-reviewed publications, with recent focus areas including black hole supernovae, gravitational wave emission from stellar collapse, and the interplay between neutrino physics and stellar dynamics. He collaborates widely, contributing to both theoretical advancements and experimental efforts at facilities like FRIB. His research bridges computational methods, nuclear physics, and observational astrophysics to decode the origins of elements and the mechanics of cosmic explosions.
