Sean Gao

Sean Gao is the Trustees Distinguished Professor of Music and Violin at the University of Delaware’s School of Music within the College of Arts & Sciences. He is a globally renowned violinist, composer, and educator, known for his virtuoso performances and contributions to cultural exchange through music. As founding director of the Master Players Concert Series, he leads a flagship arts presenting organization in the Mid-Atlantic region. He is also the creator and director of 6-WIRE, a jazz-world music ensemble and UD Ensemble-in-Residence since 2010.

His notable works include the musical Shanghai Sonatas, blending theatre and classical music to tell the story of Jewish refugees in Shanghai, and The Mountains are Calling, a National Parks music video project. He has performed with over 100 orchestras globally and been honored with prestigious awards for his artistic contributions.

Prof. Gao’s research and creative work focus on attracting new audiences to classical music through innovative productions and cultural collaborations. He performs on a rare 1794 G.B. Ceruti violin provided by the University of Delaware.
