Sean Doyle

Sean Doyle is a Full Professor in the Department of Biology at Maynooth University, part of the Faculty of Science & Engineering. He holds a PhD and BSc in Biochemistry from University College Cork (UCC). His research focuses on microbial pathogenicity, antimicrobial resistance, and innovative diagnostic technologies, with over 130 peer-reviewed publications and a patent (EP2709659) for fungal diagnostic technology. He secured significant funding for mass spectrometry and molecular testing infrastructure, contributing to national pandemic response. His work spans fungal genetics, proteomics, and biotechnology collaborations.

Education: PhD (Biochemistry, UCC, 1989); BSc (Biochemistry, UCC, 1985).

Research interests include fungal pathogen Aspergillus fumigatus, gliotoxin mechanisms, and diagnostic development for sepsis and viral infections. He leads projects on fungal siderophores, zinc chelation, and industrial biocatalysts. His group collaborates with institutions like Leeds Beckett University and Makerere University on global health challenges.

Key contributions include: securing €566k for MS facilities; developing SARS-CoV-2 diagnostics; and supervising 31 PhD and 11 MSc students. He is a Visiting Professor at Leeds Beckett University.
