Sean Carroll is Distinguished University Professor, Andrew and Mary Balo and Nicholas and Susan Simon Endowed Chair at University of Maryland, and Vice President for Science Education at Howard Hughes Medical Institute. His research examines evolutionary mechanisms behind biological novelty.
His research investigates origins of novelty in biological systems, studying contributions of gene co-option, duplication, and regulatory changes to trait evolution. Current work includes snake venom evolution and cuticular hydrocarbon diversification in Drosophila.
Carroll's publications span venom evolution, enzyme innovation, and science education. Recent work integrates molecular evolution with educational research on creative thinking in STEM.
Executive producer of documentary films and author of scientific books including 'The Serengeti Rules' and 'Brave Genius'.
