Scottie Buehler

Dr. Scottie Buehler is an Assistant Professor at Sam Houston State University specializing in the history of medicine, gender studies, and eighteenth-century France. Her research explores the socio-political dynamics of midwifery practices and occupational boundaries, with a focus on France and the Atlantic world. She holds a Ph.D. in History of Science and Medicine from UCLA (2020), a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) certification (2010), and a B.A. from the University of Texas (2006).

Her research interests bridge medicine, gender studies, and material culture. Her in-progress book manuscript examines midwifery training implementations across eighteenth-century France. Teaching focuses on interdisciplinary approaches to history, emphasizing critical analysis and skill development in World History and History of Medicine courses.

Dr. Buehler advocates for midwifery access through her board role at the Midwifery Education Accreditation Council. Her scholarship has been supported by the American Association for the History of Nursing, Chateaubriand Fellowship, Huntington Library, and National Library of Medicine.
