Dr. Scott Yarbrough is a Professor in the English Department at Charleston Southern University, where he has taught since 1997 and served as chair from 2003 to 2017. He earned his BA and MA in English from Florida State University and a PhD in American Literature from the University of Alabama, focusing on the novel, modernism, and Southern literature.
His research interests span American Literature, Southern Literature, Modernism, and Literary Criticism, with a particular emphasis on Cormac McCarthy, Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, and Billy Collins. His work explores intertextuality, Southern Gothic themes, and connections between literature and popular culture.
Yarbrough's publications include co-authoring A Practical Introduction to Literary Study and co-editing two volumes of The Road in the Cormac McCarthy Casebook Series. His recent articles analyze themes in Southern and postmodern fiction, Hemingway's political narratives, and symbolism in McCarthy's novels.
Scientific awards and honors include the South Carolina Arts Commission Prose Fellowship (2008), Tennessee Williams Scholar at the Sewanee Writers' Conference (2004), and multiple Excellence in Teaching Awards at Charleston Southern University. He is also a member of the Cormac McCarthy Journal's editorial board and has held leadership roles in the South Atlantic Modern Language Association (SAMLA).
