His research focuses on advancing medical engineering innovations through the Medical Engineering and Discovery Lab (MED Lab), emphasizing the entire lifecycle of medical device commercialization—from lab prototypes to regulatory compliance, market analysis, and capital strategy. The lab has filed 59 patents (30 licensed), supported clinical trials, and spun out two startups: Virtuoso Surgical, Inc. and EndoTheia, Inc.
The MED Lab has trained 14 alumni now in faculty positions and 8 working in Nashville-area startups. It also collaborates with the Master of Engineering Degree (ESI), Vanderbilt School of Medicine, and the Medical Innovators Development Program (MIDP).
