Scott Smith is a Professor of Christian Apologetics at Biola University’s Talbot School of Theology. He holds a Ph.D. and M.A. from the University of Southern California, an M.A. from Talbot School of Theology, and a B.A. from California State University, Hayward. His research challenges constructivist epistemologies by advocating for the existence of universals and essences to ground knowledge in ethics, religion, and sciences. Key areas include critiques of nominalism, postmodernism, and critical race theory, alongside explorations of human dignity, the moral argument for God, and progressive Christianity.
Major publications include Naturalism and Our Knowledge of Reality (2012), In Search of Moral Knowledge (2014), and Authentically Emergent (2018). His articles span philosophical theology, metaphysics, and ethics. He has received grants from Biola University and the Acton Institute.
Awards include the 2007-08 Excellence in Scholarship Award and multiple Biola Research Grants. Smith is Secretary-Treasurer of the Evangelical Philosophical Society (since 2000) and an active member of the American Philosophical Association and Society of Christian Philosophers. His work bridges philosophy, theology, and cultural engagement through apologetics and ethical discourse.
