Scott Rozelle is the Helen F. Farnsworth Senior Fellow and co-director of the Rural Education Action Program at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies at Stanford University. He also holds positions at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research (SIEPR) and is involved with Stanford's Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center and Food Security and Environment Program.
Dr. Rozelle earned his BS from the University of California, Berkeley, and his MS and PhD from Cornell University. Prior to his current position at Stanford, he was a professor at the University of California, Davis and an assistant professor in Stanford's Food Research Institute and department of economics.
Rozelle's research focuses almost exclusively on China, with particular emphasis on agricultural policy, market development during economic transition, and the economics of poverty and inequality. His work examines issues including supply, demand, and trade in agricultural products; the emergence and evolution of markets and economic institutions; and rural education, health and nutrition. His research program involves close collaboration with Chinese researchers and policymakers.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong interdisciplinary approach with emphasis on water management reform, dairy sector development, gender dynamics in agriculture, and the effects of economic transition on rural communities. His work frequently combines economic analysis with field studies to address practical policy questions across multiple dimensions of rural development in China.

Dr. Rozelle serves on the editorial boards of several prestigious journals including Economic Development and Cultural Change, Agricultural Economics, Australian Journal of Agricultural and Resource Economics, and China Economic Review. He is a member of the American Economics Association, International Association for Agricultural Economists, and Association for Asian Studies. Fluent in Chinese, he chairs the International Advisory Board of the Center for Chinese Agricultural Policy and co-directs the University of California's Agricultural Issues Center.
His Rural Education Action Program conducts research to identify evidence-based solutions to improve health and education in China's rural areas. Through this program and his other research initiatives, Dr. Rozelle has examined the impact of policy reforms on China's agricultural sector, rural economy, and the well-being of rural populations, with particular attention to water management, market development, and poverty alleviation strategies.
