Scott Ross

Scott Ross is a Lecturer in Sociocultural Anthropology at Washington University. He specializes in communications technology, conflict intervention, and African politics, with a focus on the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda. His research explores humanitarian interventions, media technology, and peacebuilding in these regions. Ross has conducted ethnographic studies on conflict early warning systems and radio's role in peacebuilding and counterinsurgency. He currently serves as a contributing editor at the Society for Cultural Anthropology, co-editing their social media team. His work appears in journals like African Studies Review, Anthropological Quarterly, and Journal of Linguistic Anthropology. He also studies social media's impact on academic labor and community building.

Research interests include infrastructure, humanitarianism, and conflict dynamics. His recent projects investigate two-way radio systems in Haut Uélé (DR Congo) and broadcast radio's role in northern Uganda's peace processes. His work has been supported by the Social Science Research Council, Wenner-Gren Foundation, NSF, and US Institute of Peace.
