Scott Rodgers is Reader in Media and Geography at Birkbeck, University of London, where he joined in 2010. He serves as Programme Director for the BA Digital Media, Subject Lead for Film, Media and Journalism, and Employability Lead for the School of Creative Arts, Culture and Communication.
His academic background includes a PhD from King's College London (2007), PGCE from Birkbeck (2012), MSc from LSE (2002), and BAA from Toronto Metropolitan University (1999). He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and received the Birkbeck Excellence in Teaching Award in 2016.
Rodgers' research focuses on the intersections of media, cities, and geography, with particular interest in social media, urban politics, and digital platforms as they relate to contemporary urban life. His work explores how digital technologies reshape localities and urban experiences, examining content moderation in neighborhood Facebook groups, urban data cultures in housing policy, and the materialities of digital infrastructure. He employs ethnographic and mixed quali-quant methodologies to investigate how people engage with media in urban contexts.
His publications span leading journals in media studies, urban geography, and communication, with recent work advancing the concept of 'platform urbanism' to understand how digital platforms reconfigure urban politics and public life. He has co-edited the book 'Conditions of Mediation: Phenomenological Perspectives on Media' (2017) and serves as Audio Editor for Mediapolis: A Journal of Cities and Culture.
