About
Scott Misture is the Inamori Professor of Materials Science & Engineering at Alfred University, leading the Inamori School of Engineering's MSE and Biomaterials programs. He holds a BS (1990) and PhD (1994) in Ceramic Engineering and Science from Alfred University.
His research focuses on advanced ceramics for energy systems, particularly solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), photocatalysts, and layered oxide nanosheet composites. His group employs in-situ X-ray and neutron characterization to study material behavior under operational conditions. Key contributions include breakthroughs in glass sealants for SOFCs, exfoliated oxide nanosheets for hydrogen production, and defect-engineered materials for energy storage.
Active in federal funding ($ millions from NSF/DOE), Misture collaborates with Brookhaven National Lab, DOE NETL, and industrial partners like Corning. His group includes ~30+ current/past students and postdocs, along with undergraduate researchers. Labs specialize in high-temperature SEM, synchrotron/X-ray diffraction, and in-operando spectroscopy.
Labs/Teams: X-ray laboratory (Swavek Zdzieszynski), spectroscopy/mechanical labs (Jim Thiebaud), electrical properties lab (Fran Williams). Current projects address nuclear waste forms, solar hydrogen generation, and next-gen battery materials.
