Dr. Scott Merkle is a Professor of Forest Biology at the University of Georgia's Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources. His research focuses on biotechnology applications for conserving and restoring threatened tree species, particularly through somatic embryogenesis and genetic engineering. He leads the Merkle Lab, which has pioneered techniques for propagating species like American chestnut, hemlocks, ash trees, and Franklinia alatamaha.
