Irell and Manella Graduate School of Biological SciencesAbout
Scott Henderson, PhD, is a Professor and Director of the Microscopy Core Facility at Scripps Research. He holds a PhD in Zoology/Cell Biology from the University of Western Ontario (1990) and completed postdoctoral training at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. With nearly 25 years of experience directing microscopy facilities, Henderson specializes in advanced imaging techniques including super-resolution microscopy (MINFLUX, STED, STORM), confocal microscopy, and electron microscopy. His work focuses on understanding cellular processes and disease mechanisms through spatial and temporal visualization of molecular interactions.
Professional experience includes leading microscopy facilities at Virginia Commonwealth University (2004–2017) and Mount Sinai School of Medicine (prior to 2004). Henderson’s research emphasizes multi-dimensional imaging to quantify dynamic cellular activities such as cell migration, protein expression changes, and subcellular molecular movements. His facility provides comprehensive services including experimental design, image analysis training, and grant application support.
Awards: NASA STS-107 Group Achievement Award (2005), Excellence in Graduate Teaching (1989), and multiple fellowships/scholarships. His contributions bridge microscopy innovation with translational research, aiding studies in immunology, virology, cancer biology, and synthetic biology.
Labs/Teams: Lead of the Microscopy Core Facility, Department of Integrative Structural and Computational Biology.
