Scott H. Bennett is a Professor of History and Chair of the Department of History & Politics at Georgian Court University. He has held academic positions including Assistant Professor (2001–2005), Associate Professor (2005–2010), and currently serves as Chair since 2015. Bennett has also been a Fulbright Professor at Leiden University (2014) and adjunct faculty at institutions such as the Community College of Philadelphia. His professional experience spans international schools in Denmark, Italy, El Salvador, and high schools in the U.S.
Dr. Bennett earned a PhD in History from Rutgers University–New Brunswick, alongside an MA in Educational Administration (The College of New Jersey), an MA in History (Florida State University), and a BA in History/Secondary Education (University of Central Florida).
His research interests center on peace movements, antiwar activism, and radical pacifism in American history. He specializes in conscientious objectors during World War I and II, Cold War dissent, and the intersection of pacifism with socialist and democratic movements. Bennett’s work emphasizes historical analysis of civil liberties, war literature, and nonviolent resistance strategies.
Bennett’s articles explore themes such as conscientious objection in major conflicts, PTSD’s societal impacts, and the role of nonviolent activism in shaping policy. His recent publications include contributions to The Cambridge History of American Great War Literature and Culture (2021) and a 2016 analysis of shell shock narratives. Earlier works examine the War Resisters League’s influence during the Spanish Civil War (2000) and WWII-era letters (2005).

In service roles, Bennett has served as President (2007–2008) and Vice-President (2005–2006; 2015–2016) of the Peace History Society. He co-edits the Studies In Peace History book series (Brill Publishers, 2021) and has been on the editorial board of Peace & Change since 2008. His leadership includes organizing the 2007 PHS Conference at Georgian Court University and serving on multiple award committees, including the Elise Boulding Prize and Lifetime Achievement Award committees.
Bennett teaches courses such as U.S. History Survey, American Revolution, Civil War & Reconstruction, and specialized topics like Gandhi & King, Rebels & Radicals in U.S. History, and the 9/11 Wars & Era. His current book projects include studies on Igal Roodenko’s contributions to post-WWII activism and David McReynolds’ Cold War dissent.
