He serves as Chair of the Education Committee for the Anatomical Society and is a Fellow of the Society. Border is also currently an external examiner at Oxford University and has previously served as an external examiner at St. George's for their MBBS program.
His educational leadership includes founding and directing several significant initiatives:
- The National Undergraduate Neuroanatomy Competition (2013-present)
- Soton Brain Hub/Soton Anatomy Hub (2014-present)
- The Teaching and Scholarship Podcast (founder and host)
- Season 3 Anatomy Education Podcast (co-host with Professor James Pickering)
Professor Border's research focuses on innovative approaches to anatomy education, particularly examining the efficacy of near-peer teaching in anatomy, the development of technology-enhanced learning resources, and addressing the origins of neurophobia. His scholarship emphasizes working with students as partners in anatomical education, an approach recognized with a National Teaching Fellowship from Advance HE in 2019. His research has provided empirical evidence on various aspects of near-peer teaching, including benefits to student teachers, optimal educational distance between teacher and learner, curriculum placement, cognitive and social congruence in teaching dynamics, and impact on knowledge retention.
His scholarly work has significantly contributed to understanding how to optimize anatomy education through evidence-based practices, with particular emphasis on neuroanatomy education and the implementation of sustainable near-peer teaching programs.
Professor Border has received notable recognition for his contributions:
- National Teaching Fellowship from Advance HE (2019)
- Fellow of the Anatomical Society
As an educator and scholar, Border serves as a selected reviewer for Anatomical Sciences Education and has reviewed for numerous journals including Medical Sciences Educator, BMC Medical Education, Clinical Anatomy, The Journal of Anatomy, Medical Education Online, and The European Journal of Anatomy. His leadership extends to his role as an assessor for the Anatomical Society's Anatomy Training Programme (ATP), which trains future anatomy educators in the US and UK.
