About
Dr. Satyanarayana R. Pondugula is a Professor of Veterinary Anatomy in the Department of Anatomy, Physiology and Pharmacology at Auburn University's College of Veterinary Medicine. He joined Auburn University in August 2011 after completing his DVM from the College of Veterinary Science in Tirupati, India, and his PhD from Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas, followed by postdoctoral training at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.
Dr. Pondugula's research focuses on adverse drug interactions, anticancer drug resistance, and anticancer drug discovery. His laboratory investigates the mechanistic role of xenobiotic receptors, drug-metabolizing enzymes, drug-efflux pumps, and inflammatory signaling pathways that contribute to adverse drug interactions and anticancer drug resistance. His team also works on identifying novel small molecules and natural products for their potential to prevent adverse drug interactions, anticancer drug resistance, and adverse effects of chemotherapy.
Analysis of Dr. Pondugula's recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on drug metabolism, particularly the pregnane X receptor (PXR) pathway, and its role in drug interactions and cancer treatment. His work spans multiple areas including veterinary oncology, chemotherapy-induced side effects, natural product pharmacology, and the neurological effects of drug interactions. Recent publications focus on cannabinoid interactions with cancer therapies, cardioprotective effects of natural products against chemotherapy-induced toxicity, and the impact of environmental chemicals on hormonal systems.
Dr. Pondugula actively participates in teaching Veterinary Anatomy II to veterinary medicine and graduate students, as well as Endocrinology, Receptorology, Cancer Biology & Genetics, Cancer Pharmacology & Drug Discovery, and Pharmacology Research Methods courses. He also offers research-based Undergraduate Research, Honors Research, and Honors Thesis courses to undergraduate students.
His collaborative research spans multiple institutions and involves numerous undergraduate and graduate students, as evidenced by publications in the Auburn University Journal of Undergraduate Scholarship. His work has significant implications for understanding drug interactions, improving cancer therapies, and developing safer treatment protocols for both human and veterinary medicine.
