Sasha Metcalf is an alumnus of the Department of Music, holding an MA in Musicology (2011) and a PhD in Musicology (2015), alongside a Certificate in College and University Teaching (2015). She has held academic roles as Visiting Assistant Professor of Musicology at Vanderbilt University and Lecturer in the Writing Program at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her research focuses on the interplay between administrators, artists, and performing-arts institutions in late 20th-century America, particularly examining how opera's cultural role evolved through institutional initiatives.
Her current book project, Revitalizing American Opera, uses Philip Glass’s reception history as a lens to analyze how impresarios at institutions like the Brooklyn Academy of Music and Houston Grand Opera redefined opera’s cultural significance, leveraging National Endowment for the Arts and OPERA America funding. Her work has been presented at conferences including the American Musicological Society and featured in New Music Box and American Music.
Metcalf has served as Newsletter Editor of the Society for Minimalist Music since 2015, reflecting her engagement with contemporary music discourse.
