About
Sarp Akcay is an Assistant Professor/Lecturer in the School of Mathematics and Statistics at University College Dublin (UCD). He holds an Ad Astra Fellowship and has prior postdoctoral roles including IRC Postdoctoral Fellow at UCD (2014–2016) and STFC Fellowships at the University of Southampton (2009–2012 and 2013–2014). His research focuses on general relativity, gravitational waves, and compact binary systems, with affiliations in the LIGO-Virgo Collaboration and LISA Consortium.
Education: PhD in Physics from the University of Texas at Austin, and a Professional Certificate in University Teaching & Learning from UCD.
Research interests include modeling gravitational waveforms for compact binaries, spin precession effects, and extreme mass ratio inspirals. He leads the TEOBResumS waveform model development and collaborates on LIGO/Virgo data analyses. Currently supervises one PhD student and three undergraduates in gravitational wave projects.
Grants include the Ad Astra Start-Up Grant (2020–2025) and Irish Research Council funding for self-force research. Teaching includes modules on General Relativity, Vector Calculus, and Mathematical Modelling.
