Sarah Waisvisz

Sarah Waisvisz is an Assistant Professor at Queen’s University’s Dan School of Drama and Music (Faculty of Arts and Science). She holds a Ph.D. in English from Carleton University (2014), an M.A. from McGill University (2006), and a B.A. in Drama and Theatre from McGill (2004). Her work bridges scholarship and performance, focusing on Caribbean literature, human rights drama, and the Black Atlantic. She is a playwright, director, and multidisciplinary performer trained in dance, physical theatre (classical ballet, puppetry, acrobatics), and West African dance styles. Her research emphasizes decolonizing trauma theory through maroonage-inspired literary forms and ethical interdisciplinary practice. Recent creative works include the solo show Monstrous (2021) and collaborations with Bear & Co. theatre. She has received Prix Rideau Awards nominations and held residencies at the National Arts Centre and Great Canadian Theatre Company.

Research focuses on intersectional performance, diasporic identity, and human rights aesthetics. Her SSHRC-funded dissertation Dissident Diaspora reimagines trauma theory through Caribbean literary innovation. She advocates for non-Western frameworks like Sankofa and Afro-futurism in theatre. Advising includes creative writing and playwriting courses, while grants include SSHRC support for her doctoral work.
