University of Texas Southwestern Medical CenterAbout
Sarah Shahmoradian is an Assistant Professor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, leading the Shahmoradian Lab. She earned her Ph.D. in Molecular Physiology and Biophysics from Baylor College of Medicine in 2013, followed by a Roche Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Biozentrum University of Basel. Her research focuses on neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, using advanced imaging techniques like cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET), and correlative light and electron microscopy (CLEM).
- Expertise: Protein aggregation mechanisms, lipid interactions in disease pathology, and structural biology of neurodegeneration.
- Techniques: Cryo-CLEM, X-ray ptychography, and sample preparation innovations for ultrastructural imaging.
- Contributions: Revealed lipid roles in Parkinson’s Lewy bodies and developed cellular models for Alzheimer’s tau fibrils.
Her lab integrates material science and computational methods to advance EM technologies, aiming to translate structural insights into therapeutic strategies. Key awards include the Roche Postdoctoral Fellowship.
