Sarah Puryear

Sarah Puryear, MD, MPH, is an infectious disease physician and clinical researcher at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), specializing in the intersection of alcohol use, HIV, and tuberculosis in sub-Saharan Africa. She serves as an assistant professor in the Division of HIV, Infectious Diseases, and Global Medicine, with clinical roles in the Ward 86 HIV clinic and inpatient Internal Medicine and HIV/ID consult services at San Francisco General Hospital.

Her research focuses on HIV care outcomes and tuberculosis epidemiology among alcohol-using populations in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly youth living with HIV. She aims to develop culturally appropriate interventions for hazardous alcohol use and leverages alcohol biomarkers to improve measurement accuracy. Currently, she co-leads a randomized controlled trial within the SEARCH-Sapphire study (PIs: Havlir, Petersen, Kamya) to enhance viral suppression in high-risk HIV patients.
