About
Sarah Morton, MD, PhD is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and a clinical attending physician in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Boston Children's Hospital. She serves in the Division of Newborn Medicine, providing specialized care for newborns with complex medical conditions including birth defects, congenital heart defects, genetic disorders, and prematurity.
Dr. Morton received her undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan (2003), followed by an MD/PhD from the University of California, San Francisco. She completed her Pediatrics Residency at the Boston Combined Residency Program and her Neonatology Fellowship through the Harvard Neonatal-Perinatal Fellowship Training Program. She is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in both General Pediatrics and Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine.
Her research focuses on advancing understanding of neonatal health and disease through gene discovery, functional analysis of patient variants, and identifying biomarkers of neonatal outcomes. She specifically investigates the genetics of congenital heart disease and early influences on neurodevelopment. Her interdisciplinary approach combines developmental biology, human genetics, and neonatology to understand disease mechanisms and enable new therapeutics. Dr. Morton's work demonstrates strong expertise in genomic analysis, neuroimaging, and artificial intelligence applications in neonatal care.
Dr. Morton co-chairs the NICU Nutrition Committee and participates in Quality Improvement projects aimed at enhancing patient care in the NICU. She serves as co-director of the Newborn Medicine Summer Student Research Program and helps organize the weekly Broad Medical and Population Group Primer series. Her collaborative research extends across multiple institutions including the Fetal-Neonatal Neuroimaging and Developmental Science Center, the Department of Cardiology, and the National Pediatric Cardiac Genomics Consortium.
