Sarah J. Panzer

Dr. Sarah J. Panzer is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at Missouri State University. Her research focuses on modern German history with an emphasis on transnational and global dimensions, particularly the reception of Japanese martial culture by Germans in the early 20th century. She is currently writing a book titled Heroes like Us: Japan and the German Struggle with Modernity and has published in journals like Bulletin of the German Historical Institute. She holds a PhD from the University of Chicago and a BA from Kenyon College.

Her research explores how Germans reimagined modernity through Japanese cultural elements, including samurai philosophy and martial arts. Her second project examines German identity formation in First World War POW camps in Japan. She previously taught at the College of William and Mary and the University of Chicago.

Awards include the Summer Institute Fellowship (2016), Fritz Stern Dissertation Prize (2015), and a Fulbright Research Fellowship (2010-2011).
