Sarah Ganter

Sarah Ganter is an Associate Professor of Communication at Simon Fraser University's School of Communication, with a PhD from the University of Vienna (2017). She holds multiple master's degrees in Communication and Cultural Studies from institutions in Austria, the UK, Argentina, and Germany. Her research focuses on media governance, digital policy, platform power dynamics, and academic cosmopolitanism. She previously served as a research fellow at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism (University of Oxford) and has held roles at the University of Vienna.

Education includes a PhD in Journalism and Communication (University of Vienna), MA degrees in International Communications (University of Leeds), Intercultural Business Management (Universidad del Salvador), and Cultural Area Studies (University of Passau). Current teaching includes courses on Communication Policy, Media Democratization, and Directed Research.

Her work examines media policy transformations, platform governance, and the de-westernization of communication studies. Key publications include The Power of Platforms: Shaping Media and Society (Oxford UP, 2022) and Media Governance: A Cosmopolitan Critique (Palgrave Macmillan, 2022). She co-leads a Trans-Atlantic Partnership Grant studying 'Independent Journalism’s Epistemologies' across Brazil, Canada, South Africa, and the UK.

Awards include the FCAT Excellence Awards (2023) and editorial roles with Palgrave's Global Media Policy series. She actively serves in scholarly associations like IAMCR and GigaNet. Current research explores platform policy discourses in Canada and pandemic-era media consumption patterns.

Her work emphasizes cosmopolitan critique methodologies to address epistemic biases in media studies. She advises graduate students on platform governance, media policy, and cultural industries, with specific thematic interests in platform dependency, independent journalism, and academic cosmopolitanism.
