Sarah Dorner

Sarah Dorner is a Full Professor in the Department of Civil, Geological and Mining Engineering at Polytechnique Montréal. She holds the Industrial Chair on Drinking Water and is an active member of the Research, Development and Validation Center for Water Treatment Technologies and Processes (CREDEAU). Her academic credentials include a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Engineering from the University of Guelph, and a Ph.D. from the University of Waterloo.

Her research focuses on hydrological processes, water quality dynamics, and climate change impacts on water resources. Key interests include:

• Source water protection and microbial contaminant transport in surface waters
• Real-time monitoring of cyanobacteria blooms and combined sewer overflows
• Wastewater-based epidemiology for public health surveillance
• Development of advanced water quality modeling frameworks
• Climate adaptation strategies for urban water systems

Her publications demonstrate strong focus on microbial risk assessment, climate change impacts on water security, and innovative monitoring technologies. Recent work emphasizes SARS-CoV-2 tracking in wastewater, cyanobacteria management in drinking water sources, and sustainable stormwater solutions. Research consistently integrates field validation with computational modeling to address contamination challenges in urban watersheds.

Professor Dorner has supervised 36 graduate students (17 PhD, 19 Master's) on topics spanning microbial risk assessment, water treatment optimization, and hydrological modeling. She leads multidisciplinary teams through CREDEAU and maintains active collaborations with municipal water authorities. Her research has influenced policy decisions regarding combined sewer overflow management and drinking water protection in Quebec.
