About
Sarah Bernstein is an interdisciplinary artist and educator based in East Tennessee, currently serving as an Assistant Professor of Art at Maryville College within the Division of Fine Arts. Her creative practice integrates studio art, collaborative performance, storytelling, and community engagement, with a focus on exploring the intersections of dreams, ecology, poetry, theater, spirituality, and folk culture.
- Education: B.F.A. from Washington University in St. Louis and M.F.A. in Time-Based Art from the University of Tennessee Knoxville.
Her work, such as the project “Terrible Miracles,” examines historical locust swarms through textiles, sculpture, and sound, merging scientific data with invented folklore and dreamlike artifacts. She embraces contradictions and tensions in narratives where fact and folklore coexist inseparably. Sarah has participated in international artist residencies, including ComPeung Residency (Thailand), Cité internationale des Arts (France), and FIX in Art (Greece).
