Dr. Sarah Adams is Assistant Professor of Modern Dutch Literature at Utrecht University's Faculty of Humanities. Her research examines Dutch literature and theater through postcolonial and cultural history lenses.
Her scholarship focuses on 18th-19th century cultural productions addressing slavery and colonialism, with particular attention to abolitionist theater and constructions of whiteness. The monograph 'Repertoires of Slavery' analyzes Dutch theatrical representations of slavery during the abolition era. Current research explores blackface traditions and Caribbean-Dutch literary treatments of colonial legacies.
Her publications consistently investigate how performative representations shaped colonial discourse and national identity. As editorial secretary for De Achttiende Eeuw, she facilitates scholarship on cultural history across Dutch-speaking regions.
