Sara Milstein is a Professor of Hebrew Bible and Ancient Near Eastern Studies and Department Head at the University of British Columbia's Faculty of Arts. She holds a Ph.D. in Hebrew and Judaic Studies from New York University, with earlier degrees from Bates College and City College of New York. Her research focuses on Hebrew Bible studies, ancient Near Eastern law, scribal culture, and Mesopotamian literature.
Her major works include Making a Case: The Practical Roots of Biblical Law (2021), Tracking the Master Scribe (2016), and co-authored The Buried Foundation of the Gilgamesh Epic (2010). These publications explore legal traditions, textual revision, and ancient literary methods, earning her prestigious awards like the Frank Moore Cross Award (2017) and the Killam Teaching Prize (2016).
Dr. Milstein has received grants from the SSHRC, Killam Trusts, and Mellon Foundation, supporting projects like Lost in Translation: Gender, Ambiguity, and Biblical 'Errancy'. Her work critiques biblical inerrancy, highlighting textual ambiguities and cultural contexts. She advises students in biblical and ancient Near Eastern studies and chairs sections at the Society of Biblical Literature.
Her research also extends to ancient legal pedagogy, scribal education, and comparative analysis of biblical and Mesopotamian texts. She is an Associate Member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and actively contributes to academic discourse through conferences and edited volumes.
